There are several government, government sponsored and non-profit agencies that offer phone lines and websites where you can get assistance with mortgage problems.

Department of Housing and Urban Development

The website for HUD has suggestions you can use that will help you avoid foreclosure as well as good advice on what you should when you’re already in the process. You can also call them at 1-800-569-4287.

National Foundation for Credit Counseling

NFCC is the largest national nonprofit credit counseling network in the US. They have over 100 member agencies and about 850 offices around the country. These member agencies, who are typically called Consumer Credit Counseling Services, will display a NFCC member seal. You can find your local agency on the NFCC’s website.

HOPE NOW Alliance – Homeowner’s Hope Hotline

This alliance is a private-sector organization made up of home ownership and credit counselors and mortgage loan companies and servicers. This alliance was established by the Treasury Department and HUD to provide assistance to mortgage borrowers voluntary. You can content them a 888-995-HOPE (4673) or on their website.

NeighborWorks America

This group administers housing counseling agencies funded through the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program. These agencies can provide you with information about several federal programs for homeowners facing foreclosure. The group’s website also includes information on avoiding loan modification scams. They suggest that you call Hope Now if you wish to speak to someone on the phone.

Many states and cities have created mortgage help hotlines. They also can provide other resources for homeowners who’re experiencing difficulty with their mortgage.
